The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which works to preserve the Britain's independent concert spaces.

The star was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his latest record his work was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the crucial part local spots had in his initial steps.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, raising over £100k on his live tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

The money assisted venues that were confronting potential shutdown due to challenges arising from water damage, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and sound issues.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in improving amenities and gear that helped musicians and audiences.

"The concept that money from shows in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

Previously, they donated their funds to the local youth club that supported their group, alongside other local music groups.

And 1994 winners M People gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was identified with the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," remarked vocalist Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning impacted another person's life."

Recently, the trust shared it had rescued two small stages in that region, by placing them under local control.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in the city were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is funded by a national body and supporters who acquire "shares" in the buildings.
