Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
